No Pun Intended...

Amongst the string of 3D animated films being released, primarily targeting children, as well as families, UP initially comes off as a whimsical adventure tale. Beginning with a rather nursery rhyme sort of sequence, we see the progression of the films protagonist, Carl Fredricksen, and his progression from happiness to loneliness. After a series of unfortunate mishaps, Carl, as many may, or may not know, sets sail aboard his balloon-powered house, to fulfill a dream he shared with someone dear to him. Through fate, it may seem, a young boyscout, Russell, is inadvertently dragged into the ordeal. From there, the story takes flight (Again, no pun intended).

Now, where the movie falls short, stems seemingly from the way the film is pieced together. Throughout UP, a variety of concepts are brought to light, many of which attempt to draw a reaction from the audience, or form a connection, perhaps. While that may be fine, most of the situations shown may be too dark for a younger audience, or offsetting to the humor of the movie for an older audience. Death, estranged family, in addition to minor notes of cruelty are presented in the progression of the film, almost needlessly, which put me off the film towards the middle. In an attempt to blend heartfelt emotion, with goofy, sometimes genuine humor, UP falls awkwardly short of what would seem to be it's own purpose. Although, with excellent voice acting, voices which actually fit their intended character, you're able to immerse a bit more in the film, a saving grace perhaps.

While UP attempts to combine realistic situations with some family humor, a general darkness about the film may be offsetting to the general audience. The film does, though, makes itself a worthwhile watch.   7/10
